Photographer Emrâ Islek and composer, and saxophonist Stephanie Chou create an interdisciplinary zone, synthesizing photography, video, and live improvised musical performances refernecing to Chou’s original ‘Comfort Girl’ music that was commissioned by the American Composers Forum. Artistically they aim for a unique approach to highlight and honour these young women’s incandescent courage and invincible spirit to survive.
‘comfort girls’ were women and girls who were kidnapped or coerced into “comfort stations” for sexual slavery before and during WWII by the Imperial Japanese Army. Many women died or committed suicide due to brutal mistreatment and sustained physical and emotional distress.
