Art Spaces- Sibyl Cohen
June 10th, 2008- June 30th, 2008
Sibyl Cohen
Art Space
Sibyl Cohen’s first solo show in New York, “Art Space” is named after the representation of spaces being use for the development of today’s Kultur. “Art Space”, is also an installation of paintings, and, of course the space itself.
Sibyl Cohen’s architecture is both real, an existent structure, and representative, metaphoric. Just as Piranesi depicted accurate views of genuine cities as well as his own imaginary, fantastical interior mindscapes, Cohen grants precise renditions of specific buildings which are simultaneously so personal, so “felt” as to seem mythical rather than actual.
For though such spaces are ostensibly geared to the new, to the neoteric, the modishly ‘now’, it is as if Cohen has unearthed their older and warmer, their historic if not archetypal or elemental essence.
