“He would lie in the bed and finally, with daylight, he would go to sleep. After all, he said to himself, it is probably only insomnia.
Many must have it.”
Ernest Hemingway, A Clean Well Lighted Place
Gallery MC is pleased to announce Insomnia, an exhibition of new large-scale photography work
by Dawn K. Chase.
Created exclusively at hours of darkness during moments of sleeplessness, Chase creates a
subdued narrative portraying abstract temporal details in the interiors of New York dwellings.
The guiding motif is the shadow, giving a sense of space and volume to each photograph. The
artist muses on the intangible aspects of luminosity, encapsulating intricate details of particular
outlines, which echo on walls, ceilings or pieces of fixture making her compositions rich in detail
and texture.
Through her lens Chase records patterns of light, shade, and color highlighting the juxtaposition
between the bright and dark segments in each and every image. The focus of this opus is a
succession of intricate two- dimensional silhouettes of raying light. By taking the photographs at
night, in dimly lit environments the whole series offers a rich depth of color. The entire body of
work exudes warm tonalities and each photograph is imbued with rich hues of ochre, gold and
crimson.
By representing a myriad of cast shadows Dawn K. Chase signifies a knowledge of perspective,
three-dimensional space and the symbolism behind it. The mysterious essence of the shadow has
intrigued mankind since the earliest beginnings of time and is a vital part of many belief systems
emerging throughout art history, mythology and psychology.
Dawn K. Chase is a New York based photographer. Her work has been exhibited with the HVG
arts group and the NoMa Photo Group in Manhattan. Group exhibitions include: Women in the
Heights – Perspectives at the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance gallery, Economy at the Compton-
Goethals Gallery, Vague Terrain: Manhattanville at the Compton-Goethals Gallery and If I Didn’t Have to
