About August Strindberg
The world-famous playwright Arthur Strindberg, founder of NATURALISM in the World Theatre, the most famous Swedish playwright, was born in Stockholm in 1849, in a prominent artistic family. He wrote a total of 56 dramas, 12 novels and many prose texts. His significance in theatre is rather big as he is the founder of NATURALISM and SYMBOLISM. His most renowned dramas are Father, Miss Julie, Dream Dance and Shadow Sonata. He opened his own chamber theatre The Intimate Strindberg’s Theatre in Stockholm, where he set up his chamber theater plays. He is a real master and his genius can be seen in the brilliant dramatic texts, written precisely, having complex characters that have become a cult in the world drama (as Miss Julie), possessing accurate relations and solid dramatic structure. He died the in early morning of 14 May 1912, with the bible on his chest, mumbling I repent all my sins. Hundreds of artists, musicians, statesmen, students and other local people followed his casket to the grave.
About the playlet
Miss Julie was written in 1888, and had its premiere the following year at The Student Circle in Copenhagen. It is a naturalistic tragedy about the death of the 25-year-old countess. The servant Jean, 30, romantically involved with the maid and cook Christine, was seduced by his landlady one night in the kitchen. The drunk and frantic countless, filled with guilt of what she had done that night, wants to elope with Jean and be happy with her new lover. On the other hand, Jean, frustrated of being a servant, manages to persuade Miss Julie to commit suicide. The whole plot takes place in just one night.
The Performance
In the play, the plot is not changed. The actors performance is in the newest acting trend called film acting. The director’s concept is to bring the audience close to the stage, eliminating any barrier between the audience and the stage and making them the play’s witnesses. The play itself is like a boat that sets off for a long journey, that is initially exciting, erotic, playful and dynamic, but gradually the whole atmosphere becomes tragic. It seems as the boat never reaches its destination, but sinks instead. While Jean goes up and Miss Julie goes down they meet at the moment when they are both at the mercy of the biggest democrat the sex. Chamber, intimate play for an audience of 60 to 120.
The Critics
-The critics have reviewed this play as an excellent performance of Strindberg’s
Miss Julie was staged as a very inspiring, successful and justified play.
This is a challenge for another young and talented theater crew to show and prove new artistic impulses, bring freshness and introduce new artistic values to the theater stage. The play has fulfilled the high expectations and enchanted the audience with the zest and enthusiasm shown on the stage. This is an idea, worth the respect, an idea waiting to become tradition
Ivan Ivanovski -Vest (“News”), daily newspaper
Now it is clear that the Thetre has a young and sophisticated audience, hungry for something new and of high quality. Miss Julie triggered an enormous interest, so we were forced to take the other plays off the repertoire and stage Miss Julie instead. Each performance is watched by around 70 people and the tickets are sold days before the show.
